Public transportation also has important environmental and energy benefits for communities and for the country.  Every year U.S. public transportation use saves 37 million metric tons of carbon emissions and 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline. If we used public transportation for just 10% of our daily travel needs, the U.S. would reduce its dependence on imported oil by more than 40%.
