Bloomington Transit and IU Campus Bus Host Input Sessions for Route Optimization
Bloomington Public Transportation Corporation (BPTC) and IU Campus Bus (IUCB) have
partnered with Foursquare Integrated Transportation Planning to conduct a comprehensive route
optimization study. BT and IUCB invites the public–riders and non-riders alike–to share their
input on how routes and schedules are configured in a series of sessions with Foursquare and
transit representatives.
As part of the route optimization study BPTC and IUCB seek to improve their bus systems by
examining current ridership trends while anticipating future needs of riders. As part of their
study approach Foursquare ITP will develop options for serving the new IU hospital and
changing development patterns in Bloomington.
“We’re looking at ways to improve how our routes and schedules are structured within our
existing fiscal constraints,” says BPTC General Manager, Lew May, “and one of the best ways
we can do so is by talking to our riders to understand how they get around town. Looking
forward, we need to see how public transit fits into the evolving transportation ecosystem, which
now includes ridesharing, bikesharing, and, of course, scooters. As such we need to identify
ways that our transit systems can better coordinate and provide mobility to the community.”
BPTC and IUCB hired Foursquare for the firm’s proven ability to assist transit agencies around
the country in refining their public transportation networks. Foursquare, a multi-modal
transportation planning firm based in Rockville, Maryland, takes pride in its mission to provide
solutions that are “practical, focused, and implementable.” Public engagement is a primary
component of Foursquare ITP’s methodology to develop practical solutions.
Foursquare ITP and transit representatives will host a series of public engagement sessions in
November, complemented by an ongoing rider survey. Public meeting details:
